Flavors of Island Music

As part of its commitment to continue the legacy of Hawai'i’s music, Starwood Hotels & Resorts offers “Flavors of Island Music,” a campaign that celebrates and perpetuates the diverse styles of island entertainment.

The Sheraton Waikiki is proud to participate in Flavors of Island Music by featuring entertainment by some of the island's most talented artists.

Every evening from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm, the best of Hawaiian music is performed poolside. It’s hard to imagine a more romantic place to be when the sun sets into the sea.  The following entertainers perform regularly poolside at the Sheraton Waikiki:

Sam Kapu III Trio

Born into a forth generation of Hawaiian musicians, it is no surprise that Sam Kapu III has successfully continued the musical legacy of his family.  Kapu, who began singing and playing the ukulele at age seven, is known for his upbeat, contemporary Hawaiian tunes.  His first album “Sam Kapu III,” released on Bluewater Records, gained notoriety when it was nominated for two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 1994.  Kapu’s latest CD “Lineage,” which pays homage to his very talented family, was nominated for “Best Hawaiian Album of the Year” at the 2003 Hawaii music awards.

Ka’ala Boys

Widely recognized as one of the leading reggae bands on the island, the Ka’ala Boys’ sounds of light Hawaiian music make listeners want to grab a shave ice and head for the beach. The Ka’ala Boys have released four albums to date.

Kanilau

Kanilau has been performing since 1992 and consists of Roland Chang, Noelani Chang, Alapa'i Chang, and Kimo Artis. Known for their rich, melodic harmonies and unique renditions of traditional Hawaiian love songs, the group was recognized with a Na Hoku Hanohano Award for their 2004 “Christmas Album of the Year.”  The group performs with Noelani Chang’s Halau Na Mamo O Ka’ala.

Pau Hana

The Pau Hana quartet’s multicultural backgrounds is reflected in their music which goes beyond contemporary Jawaiian rhythms to span a broad repertoire of r&b, rap, reggae, traditional Hawaiian, dance, and acoustic rock.  After the release of their first album “Return with Honor” Pau Hana toured the Pacific Rim, visiting Guam, Saipan, Palau, Hawaii, and the Western U.S.

Mark Yim

A talented guitarist and vocalist, Mark Yim continues to have an active presence in the Waikiki entertainment scene.  Over the past 21 years, he has worked with big name Hawaiian artists such as the Peter Moon Band, Olomana, Makaha Sons, Herb Ohta, Jr., and Robi Kahakalau.  Yim and his counterpart Alden Levi remain true to their Hawaiian heritage by incorporating traditional sounds with a contemporary pop flavor that appeals to mainstream audiences.

3 Scoops of Aloha

3 Scoops of Aloha, consisting of guitarist Mel Amina and bassist Analu Aina, was formed in 1982. Their musical influence is Gay Pahinui, and their name means “more than enough aloha.”

`Ike Pono

Three individuals, each with their own music history, diversity, and cultural background, come together to create a unique upbeat approach to sound and harmony, bordering Hawaiian contemporary, yet still maintaining the traditional Hawaiian sounds.  This Hawaiian trio, formally a quartet, took the name `Ike Pono to perpetuate their common threads of love for God and love for what is Hawaiian, ever pursuing the righteousness of both.
